I found out that I need a crown. What do I need to know?
A crown is a tooth-shaped “cap” that is placed over a tooth to restore and improve its shape, size, strength, and appearance. A crown can:
Restore a tooth when there isn’t enough tooth to support a large filling
- Attach a bridge to replace missing teeth
- Restore a fractured tooth or protect a weak tooth from fracturing
- Cover a badly shaped or discolored tooth
However, not all crowns are created equal. A crown is made from several different types of materials, depending on the look and function you need. The core build-up of a crown is what gives it extra strength. If the strongest and most durable materials are not used, the crown may be weaker and might need to be redone sooner. And with many metals, the likelihood of sensitivity or allergic reaction can be significant. Gold is one of the strongest, most durable and hypo-allergenic materials. Over 5% of the population is allergic to nickel. The Smile Center uses only certified labs that custom craft crowns using 65% pure gold and no nickel. If you’re in need of a crown, make sure to know the options available to you.
